Raksha Bandhan Celebration in India - Famous Hindu Festival

Raksha Bandhan or "Bond of Protection" is a Hindu festival that celebrates the love and duty between Brother and Sister. It is also called Rakhi Purnima. It is celebrated in many parts of India. Raksha Bandhan is primarily observed in India, parts of Nepal, Mauritius & also observed by Hindus and Sikhs in parts of Pakistan & by all Indian people around the world.

How Rakhi Festival is Celebrated in India
Days and weeks before Raksha Bandhan, Woman shop for Rakhi, the ceremonial thread to tie around her Brother ( Brother like friend's ) wrist. Some woman make their own Rakhi. A Rakhi may be simple thread,colorful or Rakhi may be intricate with amulets, Rakhi may be fancy wrist watch or bracelet or jewelery . Colorful woven thread is most common.

On the day of Raksha Bandhan, the Brother and Sister get together,often in nice dress in the presence of surviving parents or family. If the brother and sister are geographically seperated, the sister may mail the Rakhi ahead of the Raksha Bandhan day, along with a greeting card or letter wishing her brother well. The ritual begins in front of a Diya(lighted lamp) or candle, which signifies fire deity. Brother sister look and each other and sister ties the Rakhi on her brother's wrist. Once the Rakhi is over sometimes it also involves aarti in it which sister holds the tray and rotating it around the brothers face , along with prayer and wishes.
